# 63 I work hard for the money...

So todays the yard sale and I posted a picture yesterday of the stuff on the porch which was not even half of all the stuff we had to sell. Well, the porch still looks about the same because we've moved the sale onto the porch because of the rain! I woke up at 5:15 this morning and started putting up signs and tables and getting things ready. About 6 I sat on the swing and realized everything was soaked. Now, a few weeks ago, this would have driven me to tears! But not today! We moved everything under the porch, pulled the stuff from inside and started arranging as best we could!

Now I have a lot of good stuff- tons of really good stuff. And some of it is still sitting out here with me. But I've managed to sell more than $350! I'm so excited! Moms gone to get lunch and its still raining so its slowed down considerably, but I'm so happy! Its going to be a mess to get all this stuff to the Salvation Army or somewhere, but its great to get it out of my house! We've had a lot of fun- Aunt Ju and Lulu came by and Lori was here and a couple other people we know- we've laughed and cut up! Its times like these that I know I will miss my family a ton! Who else can make sitting in the cold rain trying to sell stuff a lot of fun! Mom even met a new friend, Gail, and they bonded over their love of tea and vintage and pink! They've made plans to hang out soon! Its nice for her to make a friend since soon I will be gone!

We are probably going to take some of this stuff to the Salvation Army but some of the nicer stuff we are taking to a local lady named Miss Polly. She runs a half-way type house for addicts and people getting out of jail. She also does childrens Bible study and helps people get apartments and live on their own after they are clean and sober. Its a huge ministry and she gets everything donated- she gets a truck full of food donated each week by an anonymous donor! She makes people work for their food and board and its a really great place. I'm hoping she can use some of these linens, clothes, etc.

# 62 Rummage Sale blues...

So this is my view from the swing on the porch at 6 am. I've been up for a while and have set out tables, put up signs and am now trying to decide what to do next. Its raining. Not hard, but hard enough that whatever I will put out in the driveway on the tables will get wet- quick. Not really sure what to do at this point! Regardless, its going to be ok because whatever doesn't get sold goes straight to the Salvation Army! But this picture is less than half the stuff I plan on getting rid of! Lots of stuff! You shouldn't be surprised!

Sorry for the sporadic blogging- no internet plus spending the last two days packing and throwing out has messed me up! Better luck next week! Come visit me today- I've got some good bargains. At this point, I'd be willing to pay someone to take stuff off my hands!

# 61 Happy St. Paddy's Day...

Even though I am unable to go to the St. Paddy's Day Parade in NOLA next weekend, it remains one of my most favorite memories! Courtney and I drove down to NOLA two years ago to visit Penny, and we decided to go eat at Juan's Flying Burrito on Magazine Street (so yummy!). We notice tons of people outside and decide that perhaps it is a leftover mardi gras parade-- but when we leave the restaurant, we realize its not mardi gras, its St. Paddy's Day-- NOLA's more family friendly, and more interesting version of Mardi Gras. Fabulous floats and marching bands and costumes and all sorts of neat stuff. But, the participants not only throw out beads and other trinkets, but they throw out the ingredients for traditional Irish stew-- cabbage, carrots, onions, garlic, etc. They also throw out crackers, nabs, cookies, snacks and other food. Its fantastic. We met lots of locals who literally brought bags to carry all the food in-- they said they leave town during Mardi Gras, but love this parade because they don't have to go to the grocery store! It was lots of fun, albeit a bit painful-- you have to be on your toes to make sure a head of cabbage or the pointy end of a carrot doesn't hit you.

In honor of St. Patrick, don't you love my new blog background?!!!

# 60 Mind Dump

Some random thoughts that have been going on in my head lately...

-- Charlie Sheen is an idiot. I don't really understand why the rest of the world thinks he is funny. At all. Never has. It is unbelievable that Two and a Half Men can be the most watched tv show right now. That's sad. What's wrong with people? I think he was awful pre-meltdown and I think he's awful now, post-meltdown. And while the CBS studio executives have recently "fired" him and tried to put a stop to his behavior and are no longer condoning it, its pretty obvious that everyone looked the other way while all this happened only because Sheen brought in a ton of money for the company. That's really sad. Hollywood, in particular, needs to start valuing the life of people over their money-making potential. And before you fuss at me for being so hard on Sheen's managers, publicists, studio bosses, directors, etc., let me also say that Sheen is an idiot-- its obvious he has lots of issues. But where were his family members and friends? People who care about him? Why haven't they already stepped in? This isn't a recent thing-- its been happening, on and off, for years. And only now, when his behavior is so outrageous that the media and the public are finally noticing, is anyone willing to do anything to try to get him to stop. Its sad smut, as Lainey says.

-- I will really miss the IGA here in Decatur. They have a fabulous plate lunch-- its so good and so cheap. Today, I went to buy me and Carol some lunch-- she got chicken pot pie, yams, okra, cornbread and chocolate cake. I got hamburger steak, rice, butterbeans and okra and chocolate cake. We both ate about half of what we got and only a few bites of the cake. It costs us about $7.00 total. So good. I love random good eating places like that-- places you'd only know if you lived there!

-- Its election time again! Its time, in Newton County, for everyone to start running for Circuit Clerk and Tax Assessor. I'm pretty sure Sheriff Jackie Knight is unopposed, but as of yesterday, there were 6 candidates for Circuit and two for Tax Assessor. I kinda hate I won't be around when it comes time for the voting-- there is nothing like local politics. Four years ago, there were several tight races (well, a couple tight races and a couple we anticipated to be tight races, but ultimately turned out to be blowouts) and I was working for Judge Gordon at the time. On election night, we came back up to the courthouse and I was able to go in and see the deputy clerks who were counting the votes and listen to them making announcements about each poll box. People brought chairs and sat outside and listened and it was really fun-- exactly what you'd expect a small-town voting day to be like.

-- This weekend is the Newton Loose Caboose. There's going to be all sorts of stuff going on Friday and Saturday-- food, vendors, car show, kids activities, 5k, etc. However, there will NOT be a dog show. Yes, you read that right. Its actually quite upsetting. As you may know, my sweet Parker loves doing dog shows. Its her thing. We are a dog show family and I'll do anything I can to support her. A lot of people have a bad opinion of dog show families and think we all live in trailers while buying our dogs lavish dog collars and canine flippers and such. But, let's face it-- we live in a world where beauty reigns, and a beautiful, self-confident dog is going to go a lot further in life than one who is not. I want to teach Parker than she can have poise and confidence and kindness and beauty. She really enjoys getting up on stage and when she does, her personality really shines through. I myself was a pageant girl back in the day, and I'm proud that she enjoys it as much as I did. I get tears in my eyes when she gets up on that stage and struts her stuff. We are really hoping that dog shows will lead to bigger stuff, like modeling and acting and stuff. Its a really good stepping stone. I don't really care if she wins or loses as long as she does her best up on that stage. She will continue to do dog shows as long as she wants to-- the day she tells me that she doesn't want to participate anymore, it will break my heart, but we won't do any more.

However, there will NOT be a Loose Caboose dog show this year. Yes, that was a collective gasp that you just heard from all the readers of this blog. There will be no dog show. Parker and I will not be attending the dog show, partly because we are having a rummage sale, but partly out of sheer spite. She is really upset. As many of you know, last year, Parker received "Best Dressed" Overall. She has a little award plaque and everything. Every night when we go to bed, I show it to her and give her a kiss and tell her how proud I am of her. Although, technically, that particular award says more about my taste in clothes (in this case, a blue, yellow and white sun dress) than about her. But anyway.

She also participated in the Newton Halloween Dog Costume contest back last year and won Overall as well. She's obviously well-loved by the judges in this area. And her first dog show, the Laurel Main Street Festival Dog Show two years ago-- she won Overall Best Costume. That's another story for another day-- when she met her nemesis, Donut.

I just hope Parker will not be too sad this weekend when we don't head to Newton for the dog show. Obviously, the people in that area heard we were coming again and got scared, so they didn't want to participate. Its sad when people are jealous.

# 59 Moore ‘honored, humbled’ by Humanitarian of the Year award

I'm a total celeb-- this is how I roll...

Moore ‘honored, humbled’ by Humanitarian of the Year award

# 58 blah blah, yada yada

Sometimes its nice to be around family because they love you unconditionally. Or usually, they love you conditionally, but they have to love you and cannot get away from you, so they forgive you when you mess up and don't meet their conditions and life goes on. Its complicated. But, they let you mess up and help you pick up the pieces and they just make you laugh and make you cry and get on your nerves, but you love them all the same and you'll never be anything without them in your life. Also, its nice to have family because sometimes they call you out on your crap. They point out your issues (sometimes nicely, sometimes not so nice) and they do it in a loving, kind way. Usually.

Recently, I was called out by a family member, and this blog is to rectify my slight. It wasn't intentional, but it was a slight, nonetheless. As you know, my FAQ's last week garnered lots of attention, both local and, probably, state-wide. And one comment in particular, hit home. Mostly because I was actually at home when my mom called me and told me to read it and I did. But it hit home nonetheless.

Here is the comment:

This is pure gold. Very funny. However, I am a bit perplexed as to why you haven't discussed me yet. Leaving home yada yada leaving family blah blah. Yet, you are now near an hour from me. We can meet in Batesville to go to Grizzlies games and you can visit often and so can I. And dad has somewhere to stay until May. No mention of all of this. Nicholas

Nicholas, you are absolutely right! I have focused so much on what I'm leaving that I failed to see what I'm gaining! I'm so super excited to get to see my brother more often and to be so close to him in Oxford! It really is probably one of the best things about the move! Nicholas and I are very close-- I'm lucky to have him as a brother. I'm lucky to have both of my siblings, but my Betsy is a post for another day. A long post. But Nick and I get along really well, and I can remember joking about how Nick was my best friend, if a twenty-something year old could be best friends with a elementary/junior/high schooler! It was true-- we are a lot alike in a lot of ways.

Nick and I have a lot of fun together-- obviously, like everyone in my family, we have the same sense of humor and it makes me happy when I hear or see something funny and he does as well and we can laugh about it! When we went to the mountains this year for Christmas, Nick was lucky (or unlucky) enough to get to ride with me and Parker and we had a great time listening to random songs and laughing at the stupid lyrics. Nicholas loves Ole Miss sports and I love getting to see him really in his element of going to ball games (he's not picky about the sport either-- he'll hit up a girls soccer match if he can!) and I'm really excited about being able to bring Parker over and head to a game with him! I'm lucky he's willing to hang out with his nerdy older sister. When he was growing up, we did all sorts of things together and I waited on the day that he'd decide that he was too cool to hang out with me, but that day never really came-- of course, I don't get to see him all that much, but thats just cause we are all so busy, not because he thinks I'm a loser. At least, I don't think so!

We like to tease mom that Nicholas is "the baby" of the family and he's spoiled rotten. And he is. But, for someone spoiled rotten, he's surprisingly smart and self-aware and kind and generous. Usually! My favorite story of how Nicholas is the favorite happened a couple years ago-- I was super sick during 2008 summer and everyone had threatened to take me to the doctor or the ER to get me well, but, as someone with no insurance, I'd resisted. I felt it was mostly stress-related sickness and I was right. Anyway, Nick and I went to Hattiesburg to see a movie (Chronicles of Narnia-- we love going to see movies!) and we ate beforehand. Of course, I didn't eat all that much (hibachi-- Nick's fav-- he can put away ridiculous amounts of rice. Its really amazing.) but I still go sick. Nick had threatened that if I got sick while we were eating, he wasn't going to threaten to take me to the doctor, he was going to actually do it immediately. However, once I got sick, he changed the "immediately" to "after the movie" which was fine because I figured he'd forget. Well, by the time the movie was over, I was extremely weak and felt even worse, so we headed back to Laurel to the ER. On the way home, I tried to call mom on my cell and she didn't answer. I tried calling several times. No answer. The entire 30 minute drive home. No answer. So, finally, after the 6th call, Nicholas gives me his phone and says to call her on his phone, that maybe she'll answer. I was incensed that he would think she'd answer his call and not mine, but I called anyway. She picked up on the second ring.

Yeah mom, don't try to deny this. She "said" she couldn't get to the phone when I'd called. Every single time. Right.

Here are a few of the pictures I have of Nicholas on my computer, so they are a random assortment.

Nicholas and I at his high school graduation! Sweetest boy!

Nicholas and his roommate Dillon in the Grove-- love Dillon. He's a funny guy and he puts up with Nicholas as a roommate, which I can only imagine isn't always fun. Plus, these two boys have possibly the cleanest dorm room I've ever seen. For two guys.

Nick and Betsy in the Grove

Sweetest boy and sweetest girl. I'm not sure who is more spoiled.

# 57 Always making apologies...

So, its been a busy weekend. And always on the weekends I'm making apologies for not blogging like I'm supposed to be. I no longer have internet at the house, so I can only blog when I head to Decatur to work. Which is today! Or I can go to Lee's coffeehouse and buy something to eat, or, more likely, sit outside in my car while I blog. Which is stealing the internet! Or I can blog from my phone, but lots of people say those posts are boring because they are usually short. Well, my thumbs are apparently too big to type easily, ok? Are you happy? You've given me a complex about my big old man-thumbs. Now I'll have something to discuss in therapy since I've worked through lots of my other issues.

Regardless, it was a busy weekend and it was a good weekend. I'm busy packing up stuff and getting ready for my big rummage sale this weekend, so I did a lot of that yesterday. The weekend started out with the Laurel Junior Auxiliary 2011 Gala! This is our annual fundraiser and thank you party to our donors and we work really hard getting it ready. I spent a good portion of Wednesday night and nearly all day Thursday and Friday helping prepare and there were lots of other LJA members who put in as many or more hours (also there were lots of LJA members who didn't even come close to that many hours, but I'm not complaining-- I choose to put in that many hours even though I didn't have to-- I especially didn't have to since I'm really no longer going to be an active member. Anyway.)

The theme this year was Mardi Gras and we had a great time! Here are some pictures I took of the preparation, the decorations and the actual event!

Entrance-way

The flowers were so pretty-- this is a close-up of a very large arrangement on the food table

I helped decorate this table-- we chose to honor the LJA Class of 1991, which just happened to be the year my dear mommmy was President! So, this table was filled with scrapbooks and photos of that year. It was a lot of fun to organize, and frankly, turned out a lot nicer than I'd anticipated-- I'm not great at doing tables like these.

Speaking of decorating tables, each Project Chairman was supposed to decorate a table about their particular project. I'm chairman of Project Destination, and this is NOT my table. This is a much cuter one right next time mine. Mine wasn't this cute.

Mardi Gras masks each LJA member got, and each 1991 LJA member got as a gift. They were also for sale, but unfortunately, we have a ton left over.

Some additional project tables.

Yet another picture of me and Allison! I thought all my friends looked so good-- its so fun to get all dressed up like prom again!

The table lady who passed out our cake balls to guests-- this was so fun! She was literally wearing a table!!!

Paige McCardle and I during clean-up-- the Gala didn't end till midnight, but about 10:45 or so, lots of people started leaving and all of us members were stuck sitting around while a few people continued dancing! You could tell we were so tired and ready to go but we couldn't leave till we cleaned! Secret alert-- I actually snuck out around 11 and drove the 2 miles home and changed clothes and watched tv till closer to midnight! I nearly fell asleep on the couch but I made myself get back up.

Jill Myers and I during clean-up-- she was my "date" since her husband couldn't come! Love Jill!

Erica, Allison and myself-- we were tired! We went to Waffle House not long after that!!
